Mohan Gurunathan (vegan) is an electrical engineering consultant in Silicon Valley in the United States. Mr. Gurunathan is also an advisor to and board member of several non-profit organizations focused on the environment or animal-person welfare. “So when we are children and we go to school, all of us learn about the food chain. But one thing that’s not taught that I think should be, is called the 10% law. And that is when you go from any level in the food chain to the next level, there’s a 90% loss in the food energy and the nutrients that went into the level below you. And what it means is that when we choose to eat animals or animal products, we’re wasting 90% of the resources that went into making those animal products or to growing the animals that we’re eating. We cannot really sustain ourselves with that level of inefficiency now.”

“Most people don’t like the fact that animals are getting killed and they ignore that. So, this is a way to get people to think about that number. And then when I give them the actual answer, which is about 80 billion land animals and about one to three trillion marine animals, usually there’s an audible gasp from the audience.” “For instance, if you create products that cure disease, now you’re creating more waste, electronic waste, or other types of negative impacts. Nothing seemed to be a win-win. And when I started to learn about the impact of dietary change, it became obvious: this is a huge win-win-win. We win for our health, for the animals, for the planet. And people need to work together to make these changes. So, millions of people change, and not just yourself.”
